Dancing With Myself- Nouvelle Vague

Title: Dancing With Myself
Artist: Nouvelle Vague
Album: Bande à Part
Year: 2006
Genre: Bossanova/ New Wave (explanation to follow)
File Type: mp3

How did you find this song?: I don't remember why I started downloading them yesterday. But I did. And thank GOODNESS.

What do you like about this song?: To quote from Wikipedia, "Their name is a play on words referring simultaneously to: their 'Frenchness' and 'artiness' (the '60s new wave of cult French cinema); the source of their songs (all cover versions of '80s New Wave and Punk music); and their use of '60s Bossa Nova-style arrangements (Bossa Nova meaning "new wave" or "new beat" in Portugese)."

Not how you think of Bossa Nova. How GOD thinks of Bossa Nova. The lightness, the airiness, the use of nonconventional instruments? It's gorgeous.

Seven States Across

Title: Seven States Across
Artist: J. Tillman
Album: Long May You Run
Year: 2006
Genre: Folk, Slowcore
File Type: mp3

How did you find this song?: 3hive

What do you like about this song?: God, everything. But especially the drum beat. That's the thing I'm missing from acoustics, most often, but the lone drum in this song just takes my breath away.

I'm sure this guy's sick of being compared to Sufjan Stevens but he is the slowcore Sufjan of Seven Swans taken to an extreme level.

For: nateyface and screamdaisy, who may appreciate this folk-slowcore type of music, and who should also download My Waking Days. Even though I haven't heard from screamdaisy in forever. :(

Black Beatles by Loo & Placido

Title: Black Beatles (Beatles vs. Black-Eyed Peas vs. Ludacris vs. Kelis)
Artist: Loo & Placido
Album:
Year: 2005
Genre: Mash-Up
File Type: mp3

How did you find this song?: So I was cruisin' down the street listening to the Kevin & Perry Go Large Soundtrack when I realized how much I really LOVED Mousse T.'s "Horny". So I went to his website, and found Mousse T.'s Cinema, where I fell in love with Emma Lanford, and first listened to the Loo & Placido Mash Up of "Horny" and The Dandy Warhol's "Bohemian Like You". I decided, because I really have a thing for Mash Ups, that I should look up these Loo & Placido people. Their website was where I found out about Vandalism, btw.

Just now I went back to the website, because I periodically check my favorite artists to see if anything new is offered for download online, to find two things: yes, a download section is in the works, and they now have a myspace page! I scurried on over to the myspace and found a song for download, which I am offering to you today.

What do you like about this song?: OMFG. It sounds like The Beatles were a dance band. It's so effing EXCELLENT. I enjoy the second part, but feel that it might not be universally appreciated.

Comments:

Band Website: http://www.looandplacido.com

(soon to come downloads section woo!!)

For: sunnyrea and other fans of The Beatles will find the first part interesting, I think. Anyone who likes reggae-rap will like the second part. Okay. I know I'm alone.

But good news for the Beatles fans, Beatles mash ups seem to be in vogue. I'm downloading an album with a bunch of them right now.

Shut Up and Kiss Me by Pony Up!

Title: Shut Up and Kiss Me
Artist: Pony Up!
Album: Pony Up!
Year: 2005
Genre: Pop
File Type: mp3

How did you find this song?: It was either 3hive or the SXSW post at music (for robots).

What do you like about this song?: I am a complete and total sucker for bands that expand beyond the guitar/bass/drums/vocals/sometimes piano dynamic. That, and the bridge in this song somehow makes my pulse race. I fucking love it.

Comments:

Band Website: http://www.ponyup.ca/

(under renovation but links to their myspace page where a few other songs from Make Love to the Judges With Your Eyes can be found)

For: I think screamdaisy joined me on my SXSW quest, a few months back, but if she hasn't given this song serious consideration yet, she should. littledarkvoice would find this charming, I think.

Du Trägst Keine Liebe In Dir by Echt!

Title: Du Trägst Keine Liebe In Dir
Artist: Echt!
Album: Freischwimmer
Year: 1999
Genre: Britpop/Deutschepop
File Type: mp3, converted from aac

How did you find this song?: I got this song along with all of it's friends on the compilation Top 99, a European equivalent of the Now That's What I Call Music series. I ripped the second disc from my friend Amelis at college, and in trolling through the misc. songs on it, came upon this one.

What do you like about this song?: The music and vocals are very rich and inter-woven, not a typical "poppy" sound at all. The lyrics (translated, if you must) are very striking, very forward-thinking for the era and genre that Echt! have usually been circumscribed to.

Comments: It's in German, so I hope none of you are prejudiced to that.

For: Abby, Brandon, Randhal, Becca. Anyone else who likes a catchy/mellow song with orchestral elements.

Then after I got addicted to I Spy, I looked up the website, and, lo and behold, they had the whole album on their website.

What do you like about this song?: Oh, I am a slave to catchy choruses, aren't I? Simple and complex simultaneously, this song is IDM without being too far experimental. Another perfect headphone anthem for the electronica fan.
